“Is manga expensive?” has no answer without a format attached. The same story can cost $140 or $450 depending on how it is bound, and the difference has nothing to do with the translation or the paper.
Complete runs, priced
| Series | Volumes | Price | Per volume |
|---|---|---|---|
| One Piece omnibus | 105 (35 books) | $399.99 | ~$3.81 |
| Inuyasha VIZBIG | 27 (9 books) | $135.38 | ~$5.01 |
| Demon Slayer | 23 | $143.98 | ~$6.26 |
| Naruto Box Set 1 | 27 | $159.20 | ~$5.90 |
| Haikyu!! | 45 | $311.99 | ~$6.93 |
| 20th Century Boys | 22 (12 books) | $167.38 | ~$7.61 |
| Single volumes | 1 | $9.99–$11.99 | ~$10.99 |
What the spread tells you
Omnibus editions land between $3.80 and $5.00 a volume. Box sets of single volumes land between $5.90 and $7.00. Buying singles is roughly double either. That holds across publishers and series.
So the real question is not which series is expensive. It is whether you want the original covers and the better paper enough to pay about 40% more for them.
Where the price does move
- Oversized editions. Perfect Edition, VIZBIG and similar lines cost more per page and are worth it for dense art. 20th Century Boys at $7.61 a volume is the highest here, and it is the one series in the table where the format genuinely changes the reading.
- Length. Haikyu!! costs more in total than Demon Slayer because it is twice as long, not because it is priced worse.
- Partial sets. Sets covering the middle of a series are often priced higher per volume, because they sell to people who already own the start and have no alternative.
Budgeting a collection
A reasonable rule: $150 buys a complete short series, $300 buys a complete long one, and $400 buys the longest series in print. Anything above that is a collector’s edition rather than a reading copy.
If you are starting from nothing, one complete finished series beats three partial ones. Everything above is in stock on the Manga shelf.
