Collecting PVC Statues: Scale, Material and Shelf Space

September 29, 2026 · admin

Figure listings are written for people who already collect. Scale numbers, material codes, edition sizes — none of it is explained, because the assumption is that you know. Here is what it means.

PVC, resin and cold cast

PVC is the standard. It is a plastic, it takes paint well, it does not shatter if knocked, and it is what almost every figure under $100 is made from. Slight flexibility in thin parts — a sword, a strand of hair — is normal and not a defect.

Resin is heavier, holds finer detail, and breaks when dropped. It is used for limited statues at several hundred dollars and up.

Cold cast mixes resin with stone or metal powder for weight. It feels more expensive because it is heavier, which is most of the point.

For a shelf collection, PVC is the right material. It survives being moved and dusted.

How scale works

Scale is a fraction of the character’s in-universe height. 1/6 is large — roughly 12 inches for an adult. 1/7 and 1/8 are the common collector sizes, around 8 to 10 inches. 1/10 is the smaller end.

Most figures are sold by inches instead, which is more useful. A 14-inch statue at $78.47 is a centrepiece. A 7-inch figure sits in a row with others.

What you pay for

Price Typically Example
$25–$40 7–9 inch, simple pose, fewer paint stages Vesemir, $29.76
$40–$60 Detailed base, multi-part sculpt, more paint Lara Croft, $58.09
$60–$90 Large scale or licensed premium line Blue-Eyes, $78.47

Shelf space, honestly

A 9-inch figure needs about 7 inches of depth once the base is accounted for, and standard shelving is often 10 to 12 inches deep. Three figures of that size fill a 30-inch shelf comfortably. Four is tight.

Measure before ordering a 14-inch piece. It is the most common regret in figure collecting and the easiest to avoid.

Keeping them

  • Out of sunlight. PVC fades, and white plastic yellows. This is the one that ruins collections.
  • Dust with a soft brush, not a cloth. Cloth catches on thin parts and snaps them.
  • Keep the box if you ever intend to sell. It is worth a real percentage of the resale price.

The shelf is on the Collectibles page.
